In most cases, travellers going to Macedonia from Australia are going to end the flight in Ohrid at Ohrid Airport. Those who are visiting from Perth will find flights that start at 30h 45m in duration and continue up to flights that can last as long as 39h 45m. From Sydney Airport, flights are quite a bit longer and can run from 43h 30m up to 53h 50m. The duration of the flight will vary based on the airline, number of stops, and how long the stops on the way take.
Unfortunately, there currently are no direct, nonstop flights from Australia to Macedonia. The most common stopover flight when leaving Melbourne is offered by SWISS, but combination flights may also be available. If you choose to leave from Perth, the airlines that offer flights include Qatar Airlines, Wizz Air, Emirates, and several others. Most of the flights are combination flights using two or more airlines. Some of the Macedonia flight deals require passengers to change airports at one of the stopover points.
Since Macedonia is a small country, travelling is often done on the ground rather than in the air. There is a well-developed bus network in the country with services in all the major cities. Some of the companies offering bus transport are Indbus International and VBI Bus Makedonija. Travellers can also use the train system through Makedonski Zeleznici that connects Kosovo, Volkova, Serbia, and Greece. Taxis are available in most cities with professional drivers. Some travellers choose to rent a car to get around the area.
Visiting the capital city of Skopje is something many travellers enjoy. A few kilometres from the city is Canyon Matka where travellers can visit Matka Lake and rent a boat to see the nearby caves. Macedonia’s largest national park is Mavrovo National Park, which offers large mountain peaks and fantastic skiing. Ohrid is another place to visit which is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is filled with monasteries and old town sites. The second-largest city in Macedonia is Bitola, which is near the border of Greece. Travellers can enjoy top dining, culture, and day trips. Popova Kula Winery is another excellent place to visit that includes cooking lessons, gourmet dining, accommodations, and sightseeing tours.
Travellers who are planning to fly to Macedonia from Australia will need to have a passport to do so. The passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of the stay. However, visas are not needed for those staying up to three months in six months. Anyone entering the state with an animal will need to have a pet passport as well as a certificate of health from a veterinarian. There is no need to have a return ticket available to go to Macedonia.
