When to fly
Nouméa is a year-round flight destination, with hot summers and warm winters, although due to its tropical wet and dry climate, the city does experience some rainy periods. Temperatures on average are between the high teens and high 30s Celsius throughout the year.
As the weather is hot all year round, it is the perfect destination for spending time on the beach, kayaking or snorkelling and enjoying other outdoor pursuits, such as hiking. However, due to the rain, some activities are better suited to some months. During the dry season, between September and October, it is unlikely that you find cheap flights to Nouméa. This period sees significantly less rain, therefore it is a popular time for tourist to visit the city. Do bare in mind though that rainfall can occur all through the year, including these months. There is an increase in rain from January to June. The rainy season (November to August) is also the hottest time of the year, so can be a good time to spend on the beach, if you don’t mind dodging the rain.
A great time to book a flight to Nouméa is August, when the streets come alive during carnival. This is one of the islands largest events which attracts around 15,000 people. Locals dress in special costumes and get into the party spirit with festivities, including, concerts and dancing. Taste some delicious food, see the grand parade make its way through the city and watch the celebrations come to a climax with a spectacular fireworks display.
The most fun way to get around Nouméa is by the Little Train, a tourist train which visits the main districts. However, there is a good bus service (check for the white pillars and be prepared to have to speak French). There is also a special bus service which covers the main tourist sites in the region around Nouméa, which provides excellent value.
Getting from the airport to the city
Most people booking flights to Nouméa will arrive at La Tontouta International Airport, which is located 52 km northwest of the Nouméa. The majority of people arriving at the airport choose to rely on airport shuttles to take them directly to their hotel. Check to see if your accommodation provider offers this service. If not, it may be possible to catch a shuttle from one of the transport firms, but check before flying. Otherwise, taxis or car rental are fine options.
