Most travellers at some point find themselves on flights to Singapore on the way to somewhere else. But Singapore is worth more than a quick stopover. Beyond the modern glass skyscrapers, shopping malls and pristine streets, there is a more traditional side to Singapore and much to do and see if you take the time to explore what the country has to offer. Visitors can be sent back to a time when feng shui was a way of life and not a fad,  when dining was a ritual of formal tea ceremonies and history lessons. Singapore embraces its ancient culture and its Chinese, Malay and Indian roots.

Walk through the Historic District and explore the sights of Chinatown, treating yourself to an authentic Chinese dinner. Lash out and spend the money you saved on a cheap flight in the mammoth Yue Hwa shopping centre or head to the famous Orchard Road shopping strip. If you have a few days to spare, take a ferry to some of the surrounding islands, including Kusu Island, St John's Island and Palau Ubin.

Singapore Insider Information

  • Take a Night Safari at Singapore Zoo, the world’s first nocturnal zoo. The open-air zoo, in a humid-tropical forest, has eight geographical zones to explore, following  walking trails or by tram. More than 1000 nocturnal creatures, representing 100 species live in the zoo.
  • Jurong Bird Park is the largest bird park in the Asia Pacific region, boasting the world’s largest walk-in aviary and the tallest man-made waterfall. There are more than 8000 birds from more than 600 species.
  • Singapore's National Orchid Garden has an extraordinary collection of more than 3000 kinds of orchids.
  • Orchard Road is popular for its shops and restaurants. It is a stunning sight at Christmas, when brightly-coloured lights bring the street to life.
  • They are not kidding when they describe super-clean Singapore as the “fine city.” A range of activities can invoke hefty on-the-spot fines, from selling or importing chewing gum, dropping chewing gum or litter on the street, smoking in most public places, jaywalking, public speaking without a permit, not flushing public toilets and even skateboarding.
  • The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's largest Hindu temple. Naraina Pillay, a government clerk, erected a hut on the site in 1827. The present temple was built in 1843 and dedicated to Mariamman, the goddess with the power to fight disease.
  • Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore has left his mark all over the city. His statue is enshrined in the business district and several city hotels, educational institutions, sports clubs and there's even a Raffles lighthouse in the Straits of Singapore. However, his most famous legacy is the historic Raffles Hotel and its elegant but shamelessly touristy Long Bar, where you will pay top dollar for the privilege of sipping on a Singapore Sling (they invented the famous cocktail), while throwing your peanut shells on the floor in traditional fashion.
  • Nearby beaches suitable for families include Changi and Sentosa Island in the south. Cable cars take you to Sentosa from Mount Faber.
