Peak season
Travellers taking cheap flights to Tasmania are spoiled for choice when it comes to destinations and activities on this remarkably diverse and wild island. From Hobart, the capital, with its stunning coastal setting, to beautiful, bird-full Bruny Island and Port Arthur, the historic former penal settlement. The east coast beaches are pristine, white-sanded and bordered by the bluest of seas. Across the island, to the west, small villages give way to the Tarkine wilderness and the World Heritage Area, which accounts for about 20 per cent of Tasmania. Peak season for tourists taking flights to Tasmania is summer (December to February) which is the warmest time of year with temperatures averaging between 17C and 23C. This is also when all attractions are open and activities and tours are up and running. Major summer events to note when booking flight tickets include the Falls Festival, MONA FOMA, Taste of Tasmania, Cygnet Folk Festival and the Wooden Boat Festival (every two years).
Off season
Winter (May to August) is low season with temperatures hovering between 3C and 11C. It’s not necessarily a bad time of year to visit if you want to see snow, and there are a number of winter festivals taking place. This is when you can get the cheapest flights to Tasmania and accommodation deals, making it a great time to visit if you’re on a budget.

Tassielink and Redline offer extensive coach services around the island. Metro Tasmania operates bus services in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.
Rail travel is not an option in Tasmania as there are no public passenger trains – just freight trains. Despite this, there are some great train journeys to take. The West Coast Wilderness Railway runs between Queenstown and Strahan, through the King River’s gorge. It’s a journey through rain forest. The Ida Bay Railway chugs from Lune River (about 90 minutes south of Hobart) to Deep Hole Bay, a distance of 7km.
