For a safe, comfortable flight follow our guide on how to travel while pregnant…

When is it safe to fly?

It is generally safe to fly while pregnant but there are precautions and airline restrictions. There is a heightened risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) so you should check with your doctor before flying.

Even for women who are having uncomplicated pregnancies it is still advisable not to fly before 12 weeks or after 28 weeks. Most airlines tend to let pregnant women fly up to around 34 weeks, but each airline has different policies, so it’s important you contact your carrier or tell your travel agent to check that you can still fly.

Before you take off …

Tell your airline that you are pregnant and see if there is any possibility of an upgrade or a seat with empty seats next to you. If you can afford it, travel Premium Economy or Business Class. Alternatively, lots of airlines offer a few inches of extra legroom for an extra fee. Check out our legroom report to see what you can expect in each class.

Ensure your travel insurance policy grants you comprehensive coverage.

During your flight …

  • Wear DVT socks and loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Fasten your seat belt low under your bump.
  • Get up and walk around the cabin every two hours or so.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of water and snack on vitamin-rich fresh or dried fruit.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks.

While on holiday …

Take copies of your medical details, travel insurance policy and contact details of people who should be called in an emergency. Get a list of local hospitals from the embassy or tourist board of your destination.

Skin is more sensitive during pregnancy, so wear a stronger sunscreen than you usually do.

Avoid diving and water sports.

Most of all, relax and enjoy yourself on what will probably be your last nappy-free holiday for a while.
