Ahhh Bali. The Island of the Gods. The Morning of the World. Whatever you choose to call it, there’s no denying the magnetic force of the charming province when it comes to alluring Aussie holiday seekers.

Whether you’re a first time traveller with a notebook filled with tips, or a frequent visitor who knows their nasi campur from their nasi goreng, you’re bound to be impressed by the magnificent panoramas that display at dusk.

From chilled out beach bars to mystical temples, it’s not hard to see why holidaymakers the world over continue to return to their favourite haunt on this beloved island to watch the breathtaking rays melt into the sea.

So kick back, grab a Bintang (or an Anchor – whatever your taste buds desire) and in no particular order, we give you the top five most popular spots to rest your behind at approximately 6:00pm in beautiful Bali.

1. Single Fin – Blue Point, Uluwatu

Chances are, if you’re an avid surfer you’ll already know this iconic locale. Luckily for those of us who are vertically-challenged when it comes to standing on a surfboard, ‘Ulus’ (as its affectionately known) also plays host to Single Fin – a hip little café that boasts grass roots surfing memorabilia, tasty fare and thirst-quenching juices.

Aside from the amazing tacos and friendly bar staff, Single Fin can also lay claim to being one of the best places to perch and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Resting high above the popular surf break, this popular little hangout offers magazine-worthy views and a totally chilled vibe, particularly enjoyed on the vast deck that stretches out over the limestone cliffs.

Head there on a Sunday night for the “Sunset Sessions” where you can enjoy some icy Bintangs and killer live tunes.

Best for:

Hipsters and surfers who love nothing more than some live music and tasty Mexican food while watching the sun disappear.

2. Rock Bar, AYANA Resort and Spa – Jimbaran

Welcome to paradise. Well, probably the closest you’re going to get. Located within the luxurious AYANA Resort and Spa, the famous Rock Bar is guaranteed to impress with its innovative design and 360° vantage point.

Descent to the bar is via an inclinator that traverses the cliff face, meaning you’re given a tasty little preview of the sunset before even reaching your barstool.

Previously voted Bali’s Best Sunset Venue (it’s even got the accolades to back it!), Rock Bar offers a mouthwatering selection of designer cocktails to complement the delicious view – because what’s a better accompaniment to a ‘Rockito’ than a side of Indian Ocean?!

Take note:

Sunset tends to be a busy time (go figure?) so expect queues at the inclinator – unless you’re a guest and can revel in VIP priority service!

Best for:

Luxury-seekers who delight in the finer things in life (like 360° sunset views and signature cocktails).

3. Potato Head Beach Club – Seminyak

Despite its comical name, there’s nothing humorous about this prestigious establishment. After making its mark on the Bali scene after its predecessor in Jakarta, Potato Head has broken ground when it comes to delivering impressive service and dazzling design.

With its iconic architecture (the vintage teak shutters that make up the exterior are unmissable), triumphant cuisine and well-designed outdoor area, the venue effortlessly blends industrial chic with seaside glamour, and invites patrons to enjoy all of its offerings – a beach club, three restaurants and an exquisite hotel.

Playing host to a number of big-name international music acts (which in the past has included Ellie Goulding and Azealia Banks) Potato Head knows how to turn on the atmosphere, so reserve a patch of lawn and relish the blissful surrounds.

Best for:

Globetrotters who enjoy vibing to some of the world’s best international DJs at dusk.

4. La Plancha – Seminyak

Introducing a touch of Spain to Bali’s already vibrant social scene, La Plancha is an unpretentious beach bar that offers fresh, Spanish bites, icy cold drinks and best of all…beanbags!

That’s right, what better way to take in the majestic, burnt orange sky than by enveloping yourself in a humongous bag of beans?

These comfy additions are complemented with brightly hued umbrellas dotted around the sand, in which you and your group can settle in and enjoy the view (until it’s time to awkwardly dig yourself out).

Take note:

Don’t be confused by the various other ‘beanbag bars’ that are popping up in the area – La Plancha was the original and still one of the best when it comes to accommodating staff and an unbeatable vibe.

Best for:

Instagrammers who are eager to upload a sunset shot of the brightly coloured umbrellas, which La Plancha is famous for.

5. Tanah Lot temple – Tabanan

A picturesque view to behold, the spectacular sunset at Tanah Lot temple can hardly be described in a mere paragraph. Located in the province of Tabanan, the cultural icon attracts hordes of tourists every year thanks to its mystical caves and distinctive position (when the tide is high, the temple appears to be floating), not to mention its tendency to put on a mighty good sunset show.

Keeping in mind the small entrance fee, visitors are able to get up close to the structure and examine the outer perimeter – given the tide is low.

Built to worship the Balinese sea gods, the temple allows modern visitors to skip the busy beachside bars and revel in Bali’s natural beauty at its best – sans music, booze and hype (though restaurants are now available on the mainland cliff tops). Don’t forget the camera!

Best for:

Culture vultures who would prefer to enjoy sundown with a camera, rather than a cocktail, in hand.
