The quicker routes can take around 30h in total, while most Senegal flight deals average around 40h. The majority of flights to Senegal from airports around Australia will take you via Doha, Qatar. A direct flight from Sydney to Doha takes close to 15h, while flights from Perth to Doha take around 11h 30min. From Doha, flight times for your onward journey vary depending on which route you choose. The faster routes from Doha to Senegal take around 15-20h, while other cheap flights to Senegal take up to an additional 40h.

  • Where can you get direct flights to Senegal from?

There are currently no direct flights from Australia to Senegal; travellers can expect the total journey to include at least two stops. Many Senegal flight deals involve flying through Doha, Qatar, as an initial layover. You can fly to Doha directly from many cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane with airlines like Qatar Airways, Delta Airlines and Emirates. Your onward journey to the Senegalese capital, Dakar, will then include one or two further stops. Some quicker options include flying via Madrid, Spain, with Qatar Airways, or Casablanca, Morocco, with Royal Air Maroc. If you are flexible on time, you can split up your journey and spend longer at one of your layover stops.

  • What is the best way to travel around Senegal?

There are several options for getting around Senegal. Upon arrival at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), you’ll find public and shuttle buses departing regularly for Dakar city centre. Taxis and car hire are available at the airport 24 hours a day. If you want to hire a car and drive around Senegal, it is worth planning your route in advance, as some secondary roads can be damaged during the rainy season. If you are heading to other parts of the country, there are daily direct flights from Dakar to the southern city of Ziguinchor. From here, you can easily travel to the seaside resort of Cap Skirring. Another way to travel to the south of the country is by ferry. You can take an overnight ferry from Dakar to Ziguinchor, which takes about 16h and departs twice weekly.

  • What are some things to do in Senegal?

From relaxing on sandy beaches to birdwatching in vast wetlands, Senegal has many natural sites worth visiting. Popular coastal resorts include La Petite Cote, near Dakar, and Cap Skirring, in the country’s southwestern corner. Just a roughly 10min boat ride from Dakar, Ile de N'Gor Island also makes for a great day trip from the capital. Here, you can lay out on the beach or practise surfing. There are also many opportunities to discover more about Senegalese history at museums in Dakar, as well as numerous restaurants where you can sample West African cuisine. For those interested in going on safari, check out Fathala Wildlife Reserve, where you can spot antelope, rhinos, giraffes and more, or take a trip to Niokolo Koba Park, where you might see lions, if you’re lucky. We recommend visiting Senegal during the dry season, from December to May, when the temperature is warm and road travel is much easier.

  • Do I need a passport or visa to fly to Senegal?

Australian citizens need a visa to enter Senegal; tourist and business visas can be purchased for a stay of up to 30 days. You will need to fill in an application form and provide official photos and proof of your accommodation reservation. For more information, contact the Senegalese embassy. All visitors to Senegal must hold passports that are valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.
