In a desert oasis fringed by beautiful beaches and tall palm trees lies the coastal town of Carnarvon. Located 561 miles (904km) north of Perth in Western Australia, this is a remote town, but offers visitors a stunning seaside destination from which to discover some of Australia's best natural wonders. The local area is rich with crops, such as mangos, pineapples and bananas that can be viewed with a visit to one of the local plantations. As a coastal town, Carnarvon also offers plenty of fresh fish and seafood, such as prawns, scallops and crayfish. Many visitors choose this isolated spot for a unique chance to get close to some of the area's spectacular natural sights, of which one of the most popular is the Carnarvon Blowholes, where jets of water are pushed up into the air through holes in the rocks, creating impressive displays. To the south of the town, the Shark Bay World Heritage Site draws many visitors who come here hoping to spot a dugong or bottlenose dolphin. As the largest area of seagrass, the region is home to a huge variety of species that together form a complex ecosystem. You can find out more about the flora and fauna in the Shark Bay area at the Discovery Centre in Denham. If you prefer to spend time within the town, then a gentle stroll along The Fascine offers beautiful views of the bay from the coastal boardwalk. Alternatively you can learn about local history in the heritage precinct, with a visit to the Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage on Babbage Island to imagine life as an early pioneer or take a vintage tram ride. Before you leave, don't forget a visit to the fascinating OTC Dish and the nearby Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum.
