Travelling when Pregnant

Tips for a safe, comfortable flight

When is it safe to fly?

It is generally safe to fly while pregnant but there are precautions and airline restrictions. There is a heightened risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) so you should check with your doctor before flying.

Even for women who are having uncomplicated pregnancies it is still advisable not to fly before 12 weeks or after 28 weeks. Airlines require women more than 28 weeks pregnant to produce a letter from their GP stating that they are fit to travel and confirming their estimated due delivery date. Most airlines tend to let pregnant women fly up to around 34 weeks, but each airline has different policies, so it's important you tell your agent if you are pregnant and check that you can still fly (including on any charter flights that may be included in a package holiday). When making online bookings, check the airline's website.

Ferry operators have similar rules to airlines so always check before you travel.

Before you take-off ...

Ring the airline in advance to book a bulkhead seat or check in early (you'll be competing against families with young kids also keen to secure prime bulkhead seats). Inform them that you are pregnant and ask if there is any possibility of an upgrade or  a seat with empty seats next to you. If you can afford it, travel business class, especially on airlines that offer a flat bed. Alternatively, many airlines offer a few inches of extra legroom for an extra fee. Check out our legroom report, a guide to various airlines.

Check your travel insurance. Many insurers won’t provide cover if the woman doesn't have at least eight weeks to go before her due date on the return travel date (normally around 32 weeks). Some insurance policies have a cut-off at 27 or 28 weeks. While you could still claim for losses unrelated to your pregnancy, you would not be covered if you had to make a pregnancy-related claim.

During your flight ...

  • Wear DVT socks.
  • Wear or shoes with adjustable straps in case your feet swell or wear massage sandals.
  • Get up and walk around the cabin every two hours or so.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Get plenty of rest - you can always catch the movie on DVD.
  • Drink plenty of water and pack a supply of vitamin-rich fresh fruit or dried fruit.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks.
  • Take snacks.

Pregnant women are more prone to travel sickness and wristbands may also help.

While on holiday ...

Take copies of your medical details, travel insurance policy, as well as contact details of people who should be called in an emergency. Get a list of local hospitals from the relevant embassy or tourist board of your destination.

Skin is more sensitive during pregnancy, so wear a stronger sunscreen than you usually do.

Avoid diving and water sports while pregnant.

Most of all, relax and enjoy yourself. If you're happy, your baby will be happy.
