Qantas

The national airline of Australia, Qantas flies to more than 200 destinations domestically, in New Zealand and worldwide. Founded in 1920 in Queensland, the airline is the second oldest operating carrier in the world. Its hub is at Sydney Airport.

Check-in times: online check-in is available for all domestic routes and all flights to and from New Zealand. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and closes one hour before scheduled flight departure.

Recommended check-in times at the airport vary by destination and departure airport. For most international flights, or departures from international airports, check-in is 60 or 90 minutes. For domestic flights, desk close 45 minutes before departure.

Baggage allowance: one carry-on bag is permitted with maximum weight of 7kg.

For checked baggage, limits depend on destination. Domestic Australia flights: one piece with maximum weight 32kg; domestic New Zealand flights, one piece maximum weight 20kg; travel to the US, two pieces maximum weight 32kg each; all other international destinations one piece, maximum weight 20kg.

Jetstar

Jetstar Airways offers low-cost fares between Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Asia.  Founded in 2004, and operated by Qantas within Australia, the airline flies to a range of destinations in Asia, including Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Check-in times: for flights leaving from domestic terminals in Australia and New Zealand, check-in desks close 30 minutes before departure. For flights leaving from international terminals check-in desks close 60 minutes before departure.

Baggage allowance: one carry -on item is permitted, plus one “personal” item. Total weight limit should not exceed 10kg.

Checked luggage allowances vary by class and destination. JetSaver Light fares do not include any checked baggage allowance, and extra costs are incurred for carrying bags.  JetSaver and JetFlex both have a luggage limit of 20kg and Star Class has a 30kg limit.

Virgin Blue

Launched in 2000, Virgin Blue is the Australian low-fare arm of the Virgin group. Its aim was to introduce low-cost fares to Australia and today it is the country’s second-largest airline. The airline flies within Australia and New Zealand, and also to the Pacific Islands, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. 

Check-in times: check-in desks close 30 minutes before scheduled departure on all domestic flights. Last times are 90 minutes before departure for all international flights, except Samoa which is 120 minutes.

Baggage allowance: the allowance varies by fare type. No free checked baggage allowance is available for domestic Blue Saver or Go fares. For flexible fares, 23kg is permitted.

Emirates

Headquartered in Dubai, Emirates Airlines is the national carrier of the UAE. The airline flies to more than 100 destinations across the Middle and Far East, Europe, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Asia-Pacific and North America. The airline is wholly owned by the government of Dubai.

Check-in times: Online check-in is available from 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure until two hours before. Check-in desks at the airport close 90 minutes before departure for passengers who are checking baggage into the hold or 60 minutes before departure for those with hand luggage only.

Baggage allowance: one carry on bag is permitted, not exceeding 8kg.

Maximum allowance for cabin baggage depends on the route. There is a baggage allowance calculator on the airline's website that tells you what is permitted for the route on which you're booked.

BA

British Airways, often known simply as BA, is the national carrier of the UK. The airline flies to more than 500 destinations worldwide. Its hubs are at London Heathrow and Gatwick. BA flies from more than ten airports in Australia and New Zealand and connects to the UK and Germany from Melbourne and Sydney. 

Check-in times: check-in is available online, at a self check-in airport kiosk or at a traditional check-in desk. Online check-in and self check-in at the airport both open 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to depart. At the airport, the closing time of check-in desks depends on the flight. Information will be provided on your ticket.

Baggage allowance: one piece of cabin baggage is permitted, plus one small personal item, such as a laptop bag. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker unaided.

Two bags are permitted in the cabin, each weighing no more than 23kg.
