Western Australia's mining boom means that more airlines are laying on flights to Perth but it's a great city for visitors too. Known for its sun and fabulous beaches, the quiet town has been expanding its offering of cuisine, culture, the arts and retail over the past couple of years.
Now, Aussies are being invited to take cheap flights to Perth to rediscover the city. Located around Swan River, bounded by the Darling Scarp and facing the Indian Ocean, it's supremely liveable. Magic to get around, there are free guided tours, walking trails and cycle paths and good public transport.
Fremantle, the port city, is an hour's bike ride away. And, from there, there are regular ferries to Rottnest Island, a favoured day tripping destination.
