The humid subtropical climate of Guangzhou has wet, hot summers and cooler, sunny winter. The rainy season generally takes place in May and June, so avoid these months if you don’t want to get too wet! However, there are several advantages of visiting during this season, as you may be able to get cheap flights to Guangzhou and the rain tends to clear away any dust and smog that has accrued in the air. Also take into account that the heavy rainfall, although less than May and June, can start in April and last until September. During the months of August and September, the city can also experience typhoons.

The best (and more expensive) time to take a flight to Guangzhou is during autumn, October and November, when conditions are extremely pleasant. Bright, clear skies and dry, cool days are typical at this time. Many people fly to Guangzhou during this time, particularly during the National Day Holiday, when flag-raising ceremonies, dance and song performances and celebratory fireworks displays take place. November is also the perfect time to visit if you’re interested in tasting China’s ‘Eight Great Cuisines’. Guangzhou International Food Festival has become a famous tourism festival centred on food since it was established in 1987 and is sure to get your taste buds tingling, with delicious, unusual flavours.

The city also tends to be very popular when events and festivals take place. One such example is Chinese New Year, which is held in January/February (the date varies annually). As Guangzhou is sometimes known as the ‘Flower City’, it’s no wonder the celebrations revolve around the beautiful blossoms. Guangzhou’s numerous spring festival flower fairs are a highlight of the holidays. If you book cheap flights to Guangzhou during this season, you can explore the variety of different plants and their meanings, whilst also watching folk performances and painting and calligraphy demonstrations. Another tradition Chinese New Year is to have lion dance performances, which bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.

I'm a long time SQ patron. For good reason. Had a similar trip last year and took another airline (at that time, price was the main factor). This time I took SQ as they had really good rates. No comparison. Dependable, reliable service and excellent aircraft. No issue with my special checked in item (a guitar that had to be handled differently) on my way to my destination (not this flight). In the previous mentioned other airline, they misplace my luggage upon arrival. After spending about an hour (with no effective help from that airline's agent), I managed to find it at another belt!

Why visit

Guangzhou is a fabulously rich and vibrant cultural hub located on the banks of China’s beautiful and shimmering Pearl River. Finding out where to visit in this city is very easy, as it has been a tradition throughout the ages for rulers to designate ‘Eight Sights of Guangzhou’: i.e. the eight best tourist attractions. The various lists for the Eight Sights include the majestic ‘White Cloud Mountain’ park, the river, the amazing flora and fauna of the Nansha Wetland Park, and the towering Canton Tower. Another very contemporary highlight of the city is the Guangzhou Science Park. White Cloud Mountain is a fantastically peaceful and mysterious place for a stroll. The parks in this city in general are very elegant and are ideal for honeymooning couples to enjoy a quiet picnic, or for families to spend some quality time together. This city is also renowned for its exquisite temples and other religious edifices. Make sure to pay a visit to Huaisheng Mosque, for example, and the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, as well as the stunning Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Getting around Guangzhou

The most popular way to see the city is by walking! There is even a designated tourist walking road, Zhongshan 6 Road, which will take you round most of the major tourist attractions of Guangzhou. There are also regular public bus services and tour buses that you can take advantage of. For the utmost convenience, visitors can also take the subway, though in the humid summer months walking can be more pleasant.

Getting downtown from the airport

Flights to Guangzhou land at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), which is second only to Hong Kong airport (HKG) in terms of size as a Chinese airport. The airport is located 27 km from the city centre, and there are regular shuttle buses to the centre itself and to specific hotels in the city too. Take the Airport Express bus or the Metro for a convenient ride into the city. Though they take the same time as the metro, taxis will be slightly more expensive; bear in mind, too, that local taxi charges also involve an additional toll fee for entering the city.

  • What does CAN mean?

Great question - CAN just means Guangzhou Baiyun Airport. Now you’ll know what this unique code and ones like it mean when you look for flights!

  • What airport do you fly into for flights to Guangzhou?

Travellers will need to book flights to Baiyun (CAN) if they wish to fly to Guangzhou. The Guangzhou airport is 29.8 km from the city centre. 16 airlines have flights to Baiyun from Sydney on a daily basis. Booking flights to Guangzhou Baiyun should not be difficult; the airport handles an average of 2 flights from Sydney per day.
