Cheap flights to Broome are in high demand during the dry season - May to September. This is when most tourists come to lie on Cable Beach, dip their toes in the Indian Ocean and perhaps take a camel ride. But there is much more to Broome than Cable Beach, beautiful as that 22km stretch of soft golden sand is.

The story of Broome is a gutsy story of Aboriginal hunters, god-fearing missionaries and the pearl divers who helped to turn the town into the Pearl Capital of the World at the start of the 20th century.

Broome is the gateway to the Southern Kimberley, that pristine wilderness that stretches for more than 421,000 square kilometres. Or, if snorkelling or fishing is your passion, a rough 4WD track from Broome will take you through the Dampier Peninsula to Cape Leveque. At the tip of the cape is the Kooljaman Resort, the award-winning Aboriginal-owned resort.

The Rowley Shoals lie 300km out to sea from Broome. They are a diving secret, one of the world's best yet one of the least known dive sites.

Broome insider information

  • Between Broome and Kooljaman is Beagle Bay, which has an amazing church. The white Sacred Heart Church was built by German Pallottine priests and brothers during the First World War when their movements were restricted. They decorated the interior of the church - especially the main altar - with mother-of-pearl shells. The side altars are decorated with opercula, a rare stone taken from shellfish. Time has taken its toll on the church and restoration and conservation projects are underway.
  • The Kooljaman resort is remote, isolated and pure heaven. It's about 220km north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula. The resort is jointly owned by the Cape Leveque Aboriginal communities One Arm Point and Djarindjin. Snorkelling, fishing and enjoying the empty beach are just some of the activities you can enjoy.
  • From July to October whale-watchers can observe the migrating whales breach offshore.
  • Sun Pictures is Broome's outdoor cinema and the "Oldest open air cinema in operation". It opened in 1916.
  • Willie Creek Pearl Farm is about 35km from Broome. It's a working pearl farm and offers demonstrations on pearl seeding.
  • You'll spy a little of Broome's bustling pearl past in Chinatown (Carnarvon Street). The corrugated iron huts from this era still stand and now house pearl showrooms.
  • If you are planning to take cheap flights to Broome, try to time them so you'll be there when there is a full moon. The Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon caused by the reflection of the moon on the mud flats in Roebuck Bay at low tide. The illusion created is one of a staircase to the moon.
