    Airline overview

Virgin Australia Airlines is the new name for Virgin Blue Airlines. Virgin Australia was known as Virgin Blue until April 2011. Based in Brisbane, it was founded by Sir Richard Branson in 2000. It serves nearly 30 cities around Australia from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne airports. In addition to its domestic Australian routes, it flies to New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and Asia (Thailand and Indonesia).

Virgin Australia describes itself as a "new world carrier" - a little bit low cost and a little legacy - and competes with Qantas on business-travel routes. It flies under the slogan: "Every day a new idea takes off".

2011 was a big year for Virgin Australia. It launched new flights between Sydney and Abu Dhabi, entered into partnership with Etihad and formed a Trans-Tasman alliance with Air New Zealand, announced A330 coast-to-coast Business-Class service, opened Australia's first Lounge Premium Entry and Premium Valet at Sydney Airport,  redesigned its flights crew's uniforms and launched new menu options.
