Qantas Check-in
Online check-in is available for Qantas and QantasLink flights (domestic and international). Passengers can check-in online for domestic flights between 24 hours and one hour before the flight is scheduled to depart. For international flights, check-in between 24 hours and two hours before departure. Passengers may also check-in via their mobile phones between 24 hours and 45 minutes before departure. Finally, there's check-in the old-fashioned way - at the airport. If you are flying a domestic route there are check-in kiosks at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Cairns and Townsville airports.
Qantas baggage allowance
Hand luggage: The allowance varies by route and aircraft. Domestic passengers may bring two bags weighing up to 7kg (15lb) each but on Dash 8 services the allowance is one bag weighing up to 7kg and on Olympic dam services passengers may bring one bag weighing up to 4kg. On international flights Economy passengers may bring one piece of cabin luggage weighing up to 7kg each. Passengers in First, Business or Premium Economy class may bring two pieces weighing up to 15kg each.
Checked luggage: Qantas operates a piece allowance with maximum weights. On domestic flights the hold baggage allowance is one piece (maximum weight 23kg) for Economy flyers. Business-Class travellers may bring one piece (maximum 32kg). On International flights to/from North and South Americas the allowance for Economy and Premium Economy travellers is two pieces (up to 23kg each). Business and First-Class flyers may bring two pieces, up to 32kg each. On all other international routes Economy/Premium Economy travellers may check-in 23kg (50lb) (or 30kg (66lb) on QF337/338/358/359 to/from Ho Chi Minh only). Business-Class travellers may check-in 32kg (70lb) (Exception: 40kg (88lb) on QF337/338/358/359 to/from Ho Chi Minh only).
Excess baggage rates: Extra baggage allowance (up to two bags) may be purchased online via Manage Your Booking. Extra baggage is published on a "piece basis" on domestic flights. Non-frequent flyers and Bronze Frequent Flyers in Economy Class may purchase 23kg; other flyers may purchase 32kg. On international flights (not the Americas) extra weight is sold in increments of 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 25kg or 35kg per flight.
For flights to the Americas up to two additional pieces may be purchased. Economy and Premium Economy travellers may purchase two bags weighing 23kg each. Business and First Class flyers may purchase two pieces weighing 32kg each. Rates range from $20 per piece up to 23kg per piece on domestic Australian flights to $175 for 5kg of extra baggage allowance on international long-haul flights (Europe or South Africa for example).
Qantas legroom
Varies by aircraft. In general, Economy flyers have about 78cm (31in) of seat pitch. Premium Economy travellers enjoy 96-101cm (38-40in) of stretching space.
Pre-arranged seating
Qantas assigns seats. Passengers are able to select seats any time after making the booking. Advance Seat Selection is available on some domestic flights (QF400-1349, excluding QantasLink services), and international flights (QF1-199).
Passenger change details
The ability to change or cancel flights depends on the rules of that fare. The cheapest seats, in general, will not have any flexibility.
Child fares
Infants (up to two years) fly free on domestic flights and for about 10 per cent of the adult fare on international flights. On international routes - Sydney to London for example - infants fly for about 25 per cent of the adult's fare and children go for about 75 per cent of the adult fare.
Senior fares
There's no discount for older travellers.
Pets
Domestically, pets may be carried and considered part of the free baggage allowance. To arrange transportation of your pet contact Qantas immediately after booking flights. On international flights pets must go as freight.
Carrying musical instruments
Small musical instruments may be carried as cabin luggage and placed in the overhead locker.
In-flight service
Even in Domestic Economy Class you can look forward to complimentary food (including hot dinners) and drinks. And there is a decent in-flight entertainment system. In International Economy Class you can look forward to a tasty menu service. On some international flights there is a "continuous refreshment service" every 60 to 90 minutes. In-flight entertainment means a seat-back screeen (6.4in) with a slew of options such as movies, tv programs, music, games and radio.
